Argus, which I'm sure you know, is Odysseus' dog. Argus is the third person to recognize Odysseus. Athena is first, then his son Telemachus. Argus is extremely old and is lying on a pile of dung near the palace gates and when he sees Odysseus, even though he is disguised, he recognizes him. Argus lifts his head and is happy to see his master home again but after realizing who this beggar really is, Argus sadly collapses and dies.
