If I eat healthy foods and exercise, can I reverse damage from a poor diet?

32 year old male. This year I changed my diet to a Vegetarian/Mediterranean diet and I run 5 or 6 days per week for cardio and work out. I ate a very poor diet, fast food and such, for most of my life. Will changing my diet as I have reverse any damage I probably did to my body by eating poorly and not working out? If yes, how long does something like that take?If I eat healthy foods and exercise, can I reverse damage from a poor diet?
It could've been worse. On a scale of 1 - 100%, maybe something like 40-50%. If you are serious about this new lifestyle change, then you will be able to reverse almost all of that.

Remember your body has been eating chemicals that 'like fat'. Chickens are injected with hormones to gain fat, and eating alot of KFC will pass on those hormones, build up and make you absorb fat. However this is completely reversible.

Also, did you know eating more sugar damages the part of the brain which tells you when to stop eating / you're eating bad food? This is probably irreversible, but alot of it is down to habit and training yourself to not eat bad food, instead of relying on your body to tell you you've been eating bad food.

Seriously permanant damage that is like... 80%-90% is anorexia and bulimia. They're worse off because their bodies will never be able to exit that 'starvation mode' and they will gain weight, etc etc.


Congrats though on the lifestyle change - you had a lifetime of eating fastfood. You need to spend the rest of your life fixing that, because this body has got to last you for the rest of your life!

I forgot to mention:
You will probably be able to lose weight pretty fast during the first year. However internally it will take probably more like 5 years to get a body that will work for you (ie, you can relax and it won't return to its previous condition)

    Olive oil is the base of the mediterranean diet, that helps avoiding cardiadic diseases and is very healthy for many other reasons (vitamin E etc...). The "fat" of olive oil is actually good for you.

    Greek diet has a lot of vegetables, pulses and greens (green beans, white beans, lentils, chicks, eggplants, tomatoes, zucchinis etc...), and of course fish.

    Unfortunately today most greeks consume a lot of meat compared to our grandparents who used to eat red meat twice a month, or every Sunday... Now we usually have meat more than twice a week!     Apply different aspects from each culture. The japanese eat a diet of mainly fish, seaweed, fresh vegetables, tofu, miso soup, green tea and sliced fruit. They (usually) never fill plates all they way, never serve portions too large, and use fresh ingredients (they live very long!). This diet is VERY healthy! From the French, you should apply the basic rule: Eat what you like to eat, with full gusto and pleasure,when you are hungry, as long as it is in moderation (this relates to the japanese too!). Mediterranean cuisine can sometimes be a bit unhealthy, but hummus, falafel (not deep-fried!), and greek salad are all very yummy!

    milk [goat, ewe, cow] - was very rarely drunk, it was considered barbaric and milk was used for making cheese. Pyriat膿 was a thick rather sour milk that was drunk and is today commonly mistaken for yogurt.



    wine - was drunk every day, even with breakfast. It was however always watered, drinking it "straight" like we do today, was considered barbaric by the Greeks [or Hellenes as Herodotus called them].



    tomatoes - were not eaten in ancient Greece, since they didn't have them. Tomatoes originally came from South America and were introduced to Europe by either Columbus and/or Cort茅s during the 1500's.



    You should look into the Turkish and Italian diets as well if you want a fuller range of Mediterranean cooking. It is healthy and delicious! You could also check on the Spanish and Algerian diets.



    Edit: also remember that the modern Mediterranean diet and the ancient Greco-Roman diets differ considerably.     Ok so my doctor advised me to avoid carbs in my diet and avoid sugar as much as I can, so he told me to try the mediterranean diet, but I'm always on the go. This is what I have to avoid: no potatoes, no bread which includes pita bread, gryos, wheat bread...you name it), no pasta, no sweets, I dont eat pork, and I dont like beef (except for ground beef). Breakfast is the hardest for me because everything basically is starchy: bagels, egg sandwiches, muffins, cereals, flavored yogurts, fruits....I want to pack lunch which is easy, but breakfast, you cant pack cold eggs! yuck! What the heck do I eat, just salads w/ feta cheese, and chicken all the time. This is frustrating. Breakfast hits me the hardest really, because I'm used to getting a filling breakfast and coffee. Now I have to drink green tea, and have cottage cheese, thats not going to stick to me for hours, I'm not overweight, I eat everything in moderation, I just want to maintain my weight because I'm a petite personMediterranean diet?

    I live in the middle of the mediterranean sea, on an island. I am a bit doubtful how to answer you. For example today at 12.00 we had a sandwich for lunch, brown seeded bread with smoked salmon and philadelphia and salad. Then when my daughter came back from school it is around 2.45 we had a big meal, I prepared pasta cooked in lamb sauce. Evening for dinner I didn t cook, my kids had a little more pasta, then grapes and strawberries. It depends sometimes especially on friday evenings I prepare pizza, still it is not very heavy.

    In the Mediterranean countries people eat a lot of vegetables and get their proteins from mainly beans, lentils and nuts, instead of meat. here in Greece where I live we often have several vegetable dishes for dinner. You麓ll find that you麓ll get tons of energy. The best effect is long term: You麓ll reduce you chances for many serious illnesses. The Greek Mediterranean diet is supposed to be one of the healthiest diets in the world.

    If you're talking about the Mediterranean Coast, the Coast is long and the food in Spain is different compared to Turkey. My parents are from a small village from the Med Coast in Morocco, close to the borders with Spain and they eat:



    - Bread with olive oil. With a tray of some olive oil and use the bread to dip it.

    - Egg/omelet

    - Cup of coffee or mint tea

    - Vegetables or salad



    I really wonder if it's healthy. They used to walk a lot as there were almost no good public transportation.

    Hi Britt, Every persons diet will be different so you cannot really speak for a whole section of people, if you go to a Mediterranean website and research some recipes you may get a more rounded idea. If it is a "fad" diet called the Mediterranean Diet, that is just the name because the basic concept of the diet contains the ingredients that the Mediterranean peoples often eat, like olive oil peppers etc. North and south of Italy have totally different diets although they will use a lot of similar ingredients. I know it exists and you can buy it but people here always eat the full fat stuff.



    And the canola oil stuff we don't really use either, despite what you guys say, we generally use Olive Oil or Butter, we used A LOT of butter. Until recently I never saw anyone using canola oil or vegetable oils. Ever.



    Americans make it look like our diet is basically vegetarian with a little bit of meat on the side, but that's not true either. As a matter of fact most people don't eat vegetable in the way Americans do, we don't eat huge plates of salad and stuff, we might have a small side dish of it, but it's not a staple in our diet.



    I'm not blaming the American people in general, because they don't know. But now that I live in the USA I see all of these articles extolling the virtues and benefits of the "Mediterrenean diet", but the diet they're talking about is nothing like I have ever seen and I lived in that region for 35 years of my life.

    Well I've never seen anyone suggest that the Mediterranean diet contains canola oil. It always says olive oil. But I think what you are seeing is a modified Mediterranean diet. The US is the fattest nation in the world, and we are also f*cking terrified of fat, so every recipe, diet, etc. etc. will always include low fat dairy, and they try to avoid talking about butter if at all possible.     Why did they claim the Mediterranean Diet was low in fat?

    What isn't spoke about in the "real" Mediterranean Diet is that in Italy, they NEVER, ever used margarine. And they used "cold-pressed" olive oil instead of America's highly refined polyunsaturated vegetable and seed oils... which turn to trans-fats when heated. They never used "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated" vegetable oils for shortening but they did use fresh lard from grass-fed or free-range fed pigs as shortening for breads and cooking. They even added seasonings to lard and used it to spread on bread. The free-range (not "hydrogenated") lard even provided a good source of omega-3 fatty acids which are severely lacking in the American diet.



    Then Ancel Keys, who started the lipid hypothesis, moved to Italy and lived to 101 eating olive oil and butter and cheese. During the depression, (after WWII), in Italy, they consumed on average about 5 added ounces of fats per person per day... half olive oil and half saturated fat. That is no small amount of fat. Visitors to Italy make comments that the food appears to be "swimming in fat".



    Why couldn't Ancel Keys see that the highly refined man-made fats might be the real source of heart disease?Why did they claim the Mediterranean Diet was low in fat?

    Ive never seen a claim that the Med diet was low fat. All I ever see is that the primary source of fat is olive oil.

    Rodale books puts out a pretty good book called Prevention Healthy Cooking "Lose Weight the Smart Low-Carb Way" by Bettina Newman, r.d., and David Joachim



    There are lots of pictures in there. The first 79 pages are info about low-carb including menu ideas for different calorie levels (7 days of those). From page 80 to 357 are all recipes that are low-carb. There are also dessert recipes in there using Splenda but you could probably substitute Stevia if you'd like.

    Mediterranean diet is AWESOME!!!! The diet focuses on using::: lots of fish, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Often, cooking involves the use of balsamic vinegar and olive oil (be careful with the oil-- high in calories; just a little should do the trick). The diet is great because you are cutting out a lot of fat from your diet (beef and chicken aren't used), and after a meal you feel just enough satisfaction-- without regrets!!! Legumes such as chickpeas, and lentils are great because they give you a great source of fiber (good for your digestive system), and protein (keeps you full). The whole grains are great for getting your energy from the carbs, but are healthy for you at the same time (fiber, once again!). And don't forget the fish! Protein and brain power! In regards to the weight loss, it differs for everyone. I would estimate that you could easily drop the first ten pounds just by switching over to eating these foods in place of your usual diet within a month. But stick with it if you want to keep the weight off. You can't just switch back. If you want to continue losing weight, increase your exercise in addition to eating the Mediterranean foods.     I would say a lot of the reason is due to the high consumption of fruits, vegetables, and unsaturated fats (olive oil, avocados, etc...). Most people with a Western diet do not eat these in any significant quantity, however there are many people that eat fish in a Western diet. I would say a lot of people in the US have had little to no olive oil or avocados.



    The definition from WebMD indicates it is pretty close to a vegetarian diet aside from fish and some meat/dairy. People from the Mediterranean are more likely to be lactose intolerant than Northern or Western European, so the dairy consumption would not be as much as those areas (probably why they listed only yogurt on that description).

    I would tend to agree with you. I've spent a lot of time in the Med and the surrounding cultures and the people are extremely healthy. I don't know if there are any statistical data supporting this though.



    There is data that reports the healthiest diet as a culture belongs to the Okinawans . . . they would be considered ovo-lacto-pollo-pesco vegetarians although the ovo-lacto-pollo-pesco part is rather small.



    But I do see the Med diet as extremely healthy because it is moderate and balanced.

    I'm assuming the Mediterranean diet includes lots of fish. In that case, it would be beneficial for weight lifting as fish is high in protein. If you find you aren't getting the same results as you were before the diet, I recommend supplementing with protein shakes and a multi vitamin.

    I live in Sicily. I follow the Mediterranean diet since 24 years (I'm 24 years old ;-)



    Eating the Mediterranena style and foods I can clearly say that I can eat border line (some times eat lot of sweets, past,pizza etc..) and stay in weight.



    You have to consider 3 main things

    1) Eat less and frequently (5 times a day)

    2) Eat fruit at 11:00 and 18:00 out of the main meal

    3) Do a little exercise



    It's all about patience....

    The major basis of it is olive oil. See site below fro differrence between good fats and bad fats. Then there is tomato sauce with lycopene but red grapefruit and watermelon have it also. Thent there are sardines with omega-3 fats. But you can get them from flaxseeds.



    Then there is the biggest con. Drink red wine and give it to your little kids to drink so you can kill their brain cells and destroy their livers. All the benefits come from reverastrol which is in the skin of red grapes and grape juice.

    You're right. It does sound healthy and probably more important balanced. Now for calories. You will need to count calories. To figure the amount of calories you will use select your ideal weight and multiply it by ten ( ie.135=1350). Stick with whatever yours works out to be then add 200 calories to maintain it. Good luck little buddy.

    Try to get as much fruit and vegetables as you can. Substitute meat with grains (fava beans, lentils, garbazo beans) and fish. Snack on a few raw nuts when you get hungry, instead of candy or junk. Use olive oil, raw, wherever you can. Get a greek cookbook and try some of the recipes, they're usually yummy and healthy.

    Hope this helps. Again, no diet plan... just a few guidelines. It will work - because these are all foods your body can digest and metabolize easily. I find it to be the easiest and healtiest way to slim down... but maybe it's easy because it comes very naturally to me (as a Greek!) :-)

    Personally I believe that a Med diet consists in eating seasonal vegetables %26amp; fruit, eating a good amount of fish, use virgin olive oils and generally smaller portions of pasta and meats..... Greek food is actually quite heavy - very good but heavy.
    The Mediterranean style diet is more than simply "Greek food." It actually refers to food eaten by all the peoples around the Mediterranean -- including Spain, southern France, Italy, and Middle East / North Africa. The Mediterranean Diet pyramid shows the basics. It includes a lot of breads and whole grains, nuts and seeds, olive oil, legumes, fresh vegetables and fruit, plenty of fish, some poultry; red meat and sweets are to be eaten sparingly. The primary things to remember, too, are to eat minimally processed food -- actual food instead of pre-packaged and pre-processed foods -- and preferably locally grown. This last part is hard to do in America, though sometimes you can get local food at a farmer's market, depending on the availability in your area. Locally grown foods here are not the same as there, of course, and olive oil generally has to be imported from far away.     the only real proven way to lose weight is hard work! that means a healthy diet, small portion sizes, and a solid work out routine. i suggest starting with food swaps :) instead of a sandwich, have a low calorie mild flavored fish like mahi mahi or tilapia with mango salsa or fresh squeezed lemon on top. it's delicious! not to mention stuff like carrots and hummus instead of chips and dip or egg whites with veggies/turkey pepperoni instead of the real stuff (14 slices = 70 calories) will save you a lot of calories. roasted chick peas will change your life, look up a recipe. you'll love me for it! buttered popcorn flavored rice cakes topped with salsa is only 35 calories, or spinach with some laughing cow light swiss cheese mixed in is under 100 calories, creamy and delicious! if you begin to eat healthy and work out, you'll be golden. start to run around your neighborhood, the pounds will drop. it's also free and totally addicting :) i know it sucks at first, but it becomes worth it. ask anyone who runs.

    What was the diet in the Lyon Diet Heart Study?



    The Mediterranean-style diet used in the Lyon Diet Heart Study was quite comparable to the common pattern but different in a significant way. It was high in alpha-linolenic (lin"o-LEN'ik) acid (a type of polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid). It included



    鈥?more bread, more root vegetables and green vegetables,

    鈥?more fish. less beef, lamb and pork (replaced with poultry).

    鈥?butter and cream were replaced with margarine high in alpha-linolenic acid.

    鈥?The diet averaged 30 percent of calories from fat, 8 percent from saturated fat, 13 percent from monounsaturated fat, 5 percent from polyunsaturated fat and 203 mg/day of cholesterol. This is consistent with the American Heart Association Eating Plan for Healthy Americans. Compared to the control group, people in the experimental group consumed less linoleic acid and more oleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid and dietary fiber.



    What are the conclusions?



    The Lyon Diet Heart Study shows the potential importance of a dietary pattern that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, breads and cereals, and fish as well as alpha-linolenic acid within the context of an Eating Plan for Healthy Americans diet plan. The findings from this study imply risk factors beyond lipids and lipoproteins (cholesterol) that have been our primary focus in secondary prevention. The fact that omega-3 fatty acids exert cardioprotective effects in several ways suggests that they could have accounted for the results that were observed. The reduction in coronary recurrence rates, even though lipid and lipoprotein risk factors were comparable, clearly points to other important risk factor changes as major influences in the development of CVD. There's a pressing need to identify these risk factor(s) and find effective treatment strategies.



    Had this dietary pattern been prescribed with a TLC diet, as we recommend for patients with CVD, the beneficial effects could have been even more remarkable. Still, this study shows that a Mediterranean-style Eating Plan for Healthy Americans diet can be followed by free-living people. This diet plan has not yet been evaluated as a long-term strategy for primary prevention.

    I do not know that there is a single definition of a Mediterranean diet. The idea of recommending a Mediterranean diet is that those of Mediterranean descent have a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease. The use of olive oil, fish, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and the moderate consumption of red wine are all regarded as heart healthy. Pasta is a complex carbohydrate and does not carry the same risk as a refined carbohydrate such as sugar. Cheese and milk are healthy as long as consumption is not excessive. Eggs are not as bad as once thought and the Mediterranean diet does not emphasize eggs although they are used to make pasta. The moderate use of butter is not a health risk. There is always a problem when extrapolating a diet from one culture to another. I have said that those of Mediterranean descent have a low incidence of cardiovascular disease. This does not necessarily mean that eating the same diet by someone of non-Mediterranean descent will have the same benefits.     1:)Spaghetti Aglio e Olio

    (Spaghetti with garlic and olive oil)





    This is one of the most famous and easiest dishes of the Italian cuisine. It is said that if you want to uplift your spirits, then this dish is prepared. The curative power of garlic is well known.







    Serves 4 or 6 1 cup GIOVA extra virgin olive oil

    1 pound spaghetti

    4 large garlic cloves finely chopped

    1/2 cup parsley finely chopped

    Freshly ground or ,cracked black pepper





    Put some GIOVA extra virgin olive oil in a pan with some garlic and cook slowly until golden. In another pot cook spaghetti al dente, drain and put back into the still hot pot. Add parsley to the garlic in the oil, add all to the spaghetti and mix well. Sprinkle with freshly grated pepper and serve very hot. Do not add cheese.

    Heat GIOVA olive oil in a frying pan. Add bacon and onion, cook until golden. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook on medium heat. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cook pasta al dente, drain and place in a warm pot, together with to sauce and red pepper. Mix well. Add Romano cheese and mix again. Serve in hot plate with additional cheese.

    12 ounces spaghetti

    1/2 cup freshly grated Romano cheese





    Fry garlic in GIOVA extra virgin olive oil, taking care not to burn the garlic. Add parsley, red pepper and salt to taste. Cook pasta al dente. Drain and mix everything, adding grated Romano cheese. Serve in a very hot plate.

    Can't help much with the recipes as all mine have to come out of a cookery book, but I can tell you as a doctor that the Mediterranean diet is a good thing to follow. It has been shown to reduce cardiovascular disease more than other diets, as well as being tasty - lots of fresh tomatoes, fish, and olive oil as opposed to butter. My advice is to buy a recipe book and start experimenting!
