Why is the Mediterranean diet thought to be the healthiest?

In the Med countries such as Spain they are huge meat eaters, yet excessive amounts of meat are supposed to be bad for you. Do we rely too much on experts opinions believing them to be correct.

Many vegetarians say that their way of eating adds years to your life, but in reality that is not the case. Just as many meat eaters live very long healthy lives. So who is right! Why is the Mediterranean diet thought to be the healthiest?
When you look at a diet, not meaning losing weight, but what people eat, moderation and balance are key to the success of healthy eating. The Mediterranean diet consists of a balance of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, lean meats, such as lamb and non processed breads. Olive oils, vinegars, natural salts and spices add to the delicious cuisine. Processed foods are rare, though there are peppers, olives, tomatoes etc. that are canned. Also, the portions are smaller and the European and the Med. Countries eat more often per day with smaller amounts. The tapas, or small plates, is popular in Spain and Tapas bars are open everywhere for the afternoon, each specializing in a certain style of food. In Italy you always have a choice of fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses and mostly all fresh due to lack of refrigeration. Once a restaurant sells out of what they bought for the day they close...a concept hard for Americans to understand. Greek food is served in a similar manner, meats, cheeses, fruits vegetables and all fresh.

The key is moderation and balance, with exercise. These folks do not drive 60 miles to work everyday and then back. They walk, at least the vast majority do except in the major cities.

They come to these conclusions by studying people who eat a Mediterranean diet and comparing them to people eating other types of foods. I think the best thing you can do is keep things simple and eat foods that are basic. Try to avoid processed foods. If you read a label and don't recognize all the ingredients I suggest skipping that item. Why is the Mediterranean diet thought to be the healthiest?
I think the secret is in the Olive Oil and Wine.... ; )
